Mesa Works with Western Utility to Fire Harden an Existing Transmission Line

Linemen working to replace old telephone pole and transformer

Due to the wildfires experienced in the western parts of the United States, Mesa Associates, Inc. provided engineering services to mitigate the loss of service of an existing 69kV transmission line for a western utility company. The project objective was to replace the existing wood poles with new light duty engineered steel poles. The new steel poles were installed within the existing easements and designed to have an increased phase spacing by using 138kV specifications. It was also designed to accommodate existing and future 12kV distribution underbuild as well as the installation of new fiber optic communications.

The project installed a total of thirty-nine new structures spanning over 4.9 miles. Several poles were replaced using a helicopter due to the inaccessibility of the locations. The existing conductors were retired and replaced while one 96-count ADSS was installed along the entire line. Mesa’s team recently completed this project in 2022 which helped the utility increase the reliability and wildfire resiliency for 2023 and beyond.
