Fossil Plant Switchyard/Substation

A major Utility was preparing for the retirement of 10 fossil powered generating units and the addition of a new Heat Recovery Steam Generating (HRSG) unit. Mesa provided substation engineering and design for this project which included three different disciplines including Protection & Control (P&C), Physical/Civil (PHY), and Telecommunications (COM). The P&C design included a new modern modular control house with over 150 microprocessor relays to protect and control the 161kV & 69kV switch yard equipment/transmission lines, while the PHY design primarily involved the upgrade and reconfiguration of the bus-work and switchgear in the 161kV switchyard. The COM design involved a complete conversion of the existing 69kV/161kV/500kV switchyards from local control to both local and remote control via an upgraded SCADA system. The completed design included two new modern modular control houses to operate the 69kV, 161kV and 500kv switchyards, replacement of aging switchyard equipment (HV Breakers, Switches, etc.), and installing upgraded relays, station service transformers and a new 161kV Capacitor Bank. Mesa was able to complete the design per the client’s stringent standards and within the client’s aggressive project schedule.
