Austin Haselwander, P.E.

What do you do as an electrical engineer?

I am a Substation Engineer who does Protection & Controls (P&C) design for high-voltage substations. My job is to design a protection system within a substation with the purpose of protecting vital transmission & distribution equipment. Many different problems can happen requiring different responses from protective equipment. My job is to configure the protective equipment to work cohesively together, and only to operate when needed.

Why did you choose electrical as your discipline?

I specialized in electrical engineering during college at Mercer University. The electrical discipline was very math-heavy (mostly calculus) which I found to be of greater interest.

What would you say to kids wanting to make engineering their future?

Engineering can be surprisingly creative, depending on your career path. While a lot of engineering tends to be fairly math heavy, not all engineering requires intensive math skills, so if math is not a strong suit, you do not have to immediately write-off engineering.
