Project management is more than just tracking deliverables and meeting deadlines. It’s about leadership, resilience, and creating an environment where teams feel supported and empowered.
For Shana Bullock, stepping into project management was never part of the plan. Leadership felt daunting, especially when making tough decisions and navigating difficult conversations. Over time, she realized that leadership isn’t about control. It’s about service, self-awareness, and the ability to foster trust within a team.
One of the most impactful moments in her journey came when she introduced Brené Brown’s Dare to Lead to our PMO leadership team. Inspired by the book’s approach to courage and vulnerability in leadership, she helped initiate discussions that have reshaped how our project managers and senior leaders show up for their teams.
For the past four months, our leadership team has been working through Dare to Lead by meeting during book club meetings and engaging in conversations that challenge how we think about leadership and teamwork. The result has been a stronger, more connected, and more self-aware team.
At Mesa Associates, strong project leadership goes beyond managing scope and schedules. It’s about creating a culture of accountability, trust, and continuous growth.
