Hydrogen Purity Monitors

The existing hydrogen purity monitors for a coal-fired generating facility at a major utility company on the east coast were outdated and needed to be replaced. Mesa’s multi-discipline team provided engineering and design support for the installation of the new hydrogen purity monitors and new equipment associated with the installation. The new hydrogen purity monitors provide a signal which alarms through the plant DCS system when the purity drops below the pre-determined level. This provides a more efficient system but also enhances plant safety by alarming plant personnel before explosive hydrogen concentrations are attained. The project required the installation of the system to be completed without a unit outage, Mesa overcame this challenge by utilizing existing hydrogen isolation valves which allowed for the installation of new hydrogen piping and additional isolation valves. This new arrangement allowed the installed system to be more robust and flexible for future maintenance.
